26 projects planned to get 37,000MW from River Indus

LAHORE (APP) – Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) has planned 26 projects over River Indus and related tributaries to incorporate their collective 37,000 MW potential into national grid.
The NTDC Deputy Manager (Extra High Voltage), Muhammad Ishaq, stated this, while briefing a media delegation from Lahore at Khan Khuwar Power Station in Besham area of Shangla district.

About the performance of National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC), he said, the Company had the credit of stretching 246 kilometres long 220KV double circuit twin needle transmission line in a very short span of time.

The line, he added, would transmit 325MW generated electricity from power stations installed over Dabair Khuwar (Khuwar, a Pashto word which means tributary or nulla), Khan Khuwar and Allai Khuwar to Islamabad via Mansehra district. Currently, the high tension power line is transmitting 72MW from Khan Khuwar Power Station to the national grid, he maintained.

To a question, Muhammad Ishaq said that after the losses and damages to transmission lines during the historic devastating floods in Pakistan, the General Manager (Grid System Operation) Sharafat Siyal has been looking after all the 26 power projects over River Indus for which a British company’s was being consulted in technical matters.

Similarly, he said, the SNC Company Canada and NESPAK has completed the feasibility report of 500KV HVDC and HVAC lines for transmission of imported 3400MW coal-based power. While, feasibility report was being prepared for transmission of 2,400MW to be generated through Thar Coal deposits and its PC-I would be forwarded to the government this month.

Established in 1998, the NTDC had been entrusted to embark upon the extension of power transmission lines as well as setting up of new grid stations in the country, he said, asserting, the company’s 8,200 employees are striving day and night to improve and expand the power transmission system.

Now, the NTDC has also connected eight independent power plants of 1,725MW collective capacity in the main power system and these stations included 200MW each of Nishat Power, Nishat Chunia Power and Liberty Powers Faisalabad, and 225MW each of Atlas Power Sheikhupura, Saif Power Sahiwal, Halmor Powers Sheikhupura, Orient Powers Balloki. Similarly, 300MW Chashma Nuclear Power Plant’s generation has been connected to main power system through 140 kilometre long 220KV transmission line.

To a question, he said, at present there are 12 grid stations of 500KV having capacity of 14850MVA and 26 sub station of 220KV with 15364MVA capacity, and these grids are sufficiently catering to the power needs of the country.

During its three-day tour, the delegation also visited the 220KV Switch Yard at Mangla Power House, 500KV Rawat Grid Station Rawalpindia and Allai Khuwar’s 220KV Stwitch Yard, while, the Project Director (Lahore) Muhammad Amin Khalid, PD (Islamabad) Zaffar Iqbal Niazi, Chief Engineer (GSO) Muhammad Saleem, Rawalpindi XEn Manzoor Ahmed, Gujranwala XEn Shahid Nazir and Peshawar XEn Arif Khan coordinated effectively the media visit to the transmission lines and grid stations.
