26 sites identified for Ashiyana Low-Cost Housing: CM

Lahore: CHIEF Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif during a meeting on Friday gave a briefing to PML-N Quaid Mian Nawaz Sharif regarding the low-cost housing scheme called Aashiana.

The CM said that Aashiana Housing Project for providing accommodation to low-income people had started from Lahore and its scope would be extended throughout the province. He said 26 sites had been identified for low-cost schemes in different districts of the province, adding that Aashiana was a welfare scheme of the Punjab government which would realize the dream of the poor to have their own houses.

Shahbaz directed the chief secretary to collect details of the vacant lands of all government departments in the province for the Aashiana scheme and report him within 10 days.

Mian Nawaz Sharif lauded the governmentís project for providing houses to the poor and said that the project should be implemented expeditiously. He further said that not only elite but 170 million people of the country also had right to national resources. He said the Punjab government should select land for the project in cities or near to cities so that the common man should not face any difficulty. He said planning should also be made for setting up small cities near the Motorway and provision of all facilities should be ensured for checking the trend of migration to the big cities.

Earlier, Punjab Land Development Company chairman Sh. Allauddin, MPA, briefed the meeting on the pace of progress of Aashiana Housing Project. He said that 50,000 had obtained forms for Aashiana scheme and in the first phase, construction of model houses would soon start.

Chinese cooperation: Shahbaz Sharif said that Pakistan and China have strong friendly relations and the latter has stood by the former in every hour of need.

He was talking to representatives of China State Construction Company Tan Guofu and Frank who called on him here on Friday. The CM said the progress made by China was an example for Pakistan, adding that the Punjab government was implementing a strategy for infrastructure development and the China State Construction Company should consider cooperation in Lahore Ring Road.

The CM also issued instructions for setting up of a committee for reviewing various aspects of cooperation and implementation of southern loop of the ring road.

Mr Tan Guofu said his company was interested in southern loop project of the Lahore Ring Road.

CM lauds World Bank: Shahbaz Sharif has said that the World Bank has played a commendable role in the socio-economic development of Pakistan.

He was talking to delegation of the bank, led by its Country Director in Pakistan Rachid Benmessaoud, which met the CM here on Friday.

The CM said that Pakistan was facing serious security problems which were leaving a negative impact on its economy. He said promotion of education was important for the elimination of terrorism and militancy, therefore, the government was giving top priority to the sector. He said measures had also been taken for the promotion of vocational education and for this purpose, Tevta and Punjab Vocational Training Council had been modernized and skilled workforce was being produced.

Shahbaz said that about 60 percent population of the country comprised youth up to 25 years of age and imparting them with various skills could help make them independent. He said development of cottage industry was vital for the generation of job opportunities for the skilled workers and measures were being taken for the purpose.

Ghaus Shah: PML-N leader Syed Ghaus Ali Shah called on Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif here on Friday. Party affairs as well as other issues were discussed in the meeting.
