AXIS Lahore Master Plan

Balochistan’s development govt’s priority, says Aziz

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said on Friday that the government was prioritising Balochistan’s development and had allocated substantial funds to provide basic necessities of life at a grassroots level across the province.

He was talking to Balochistan Chief Minister Jam Mohammad Yousuf who called on him at the Parliament House.

He said the economic prosperity of the country was directly related to Balochistan’s development, as it would open up avenues for the other provinces to further improve their communication links and expand economic opportunities.

He said the newly inaugurated Gwadar Port would serve as a trade corridor for the entire region, linking Balochistan with Afghanistan, and the Central Asian Republics with China. The PM said in addition to initiating mega projects, micro-development schemes had also been started in the province to benefit people from economic growth.

He said the government was planning to develop a strong communication network in Balochistan, which was essential to realising the economic potential of the province and would help provide people with the basic facilities of life across the province.

Aziz said Balochistan had immense potential in tourism, fisheries, livestock, agriculture, oil and gas, and minerals and mining, adding that efforts were being made to exploit these resources. He said the coastal belt was being developed, which would provide better economic opportunities to people living in these areas.

He said the government was focusing on providing employment opportunities to Balochistan’s youth and that it had further increased their employment quota to six percent.

The chief minister congratulated the prime minister on presenting another people-friendly and welfare oriented budget. The overall political situation in the province, the PML’s reorganisation and the party’s enrolment drive in Balochistan were also discussed in the meeting.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz ordered for the immediate dispatch of relief material to rain affected people in Balochistan to supplement the provincial government helping the people, who have suffered from severe rains in different parts of the province. The prime minister said the federal government would mobilise resources to evacuate the affected people and to provide them with temporary shelter and other facilities. He said Balochistan was an important province of the country and that the government would take steps to maintain law and order and to ensure overall development in the province.

The CM apprised the PM of the provincial budget presented in the Balochistan Assembly on Thursday and also briefed him about the prevailing socio-political situation in the province. He also updated the prime minister on the status of the ongoing development projects in Balochistan.
