Book explores causes of failure of democracy

The launching ceremony of “Between Dreams and Realities: Some Milestones in Pakistan’s History”, a book on Pakistan’s political history by former Federal Finance Minister Sartaj Aziz, was held at a local hotel on Tuesday.

The launch of the book, published by Oxford University Press, was attended by academics, media persons and people from different walks of life.

Speaking on the occasion, Sartaj Aziz said the real foundations of structural economic and financial reforms in the country were actually laid in the early 1990’s and not by former president General Musharraf as claimed by him in his book.

Referring to Musharraf’s seven point agenda, Sartaj Aziz, who is also Vice Chancellor of the Beaconhouse National University (BNU), said it clearly showed that good intentions alone could not deal with the fundamental problems of the state without legitimacy and effective democratic institutions.

He further said having actively participated in the political life of Pakistan, he considered that it was his duty to record the events and decisions that he had witnessed. The book explores the basic causes of the failure of democracy in Pakistan and tries to demonstrate that only a genuine democratic dispensation and not military rule with a civilian faÁade can ensure its survival as a viable federation.

Sartaj Aziz also argues that the vitality of a nation comes not only from economic progress and military might but also from the value system, cultural heritage and social energy of its people. In her introductory address, Ameena Saiyid, Managing Director Oxford University Press, said the contents of the book were important links in the chain of Pakistan’s political history to which the author had been a close witness in his capacity as a senior cabinet member under five heads of Pakistan’s government. Lauding the author’s outstanding career and important role he has played in the development of Pakistan, senior journalists Khalid Ahmed, Chief Editor, The Nation, Arif Nizami, former governor Punjab Shahid Hamid and Defense Analyst Talat Masood stressed the publication would help awake the conscience of all concerned to dedicate themselves towards building the nation to the visionary heights dreamed by country’s founders.
