A Delegation of DRS Held A Meeting With Administrator DHA Brig Khalid Tirmizi

Karachi: A representative delegation of Defence Residents Society (DRS) led by its President Zafar Iqbal visited Defence Housing Authority’s Main Office here today and held a meeting with Administrator DHA Brig Khalid Tirmizi to discuss various problems of the residents.
The meeting was also attended by CEO Cantt Board Clifton Ms Zeenat Ahmed and Addl CEO CBC Sardar Taimur Durrani including concerned DHA/CBC officials.
Brig Tirmizi welcoming the delegation said that greater involvement, interaction and participation of residents in DHA’s affairs was vital for achieving the goals of efficient and healthy civic life. He said that DHA attached immense importance to the views, feedback and suggestions of residents while formulating its policies and its development strategy.
The project consultant Dr Lakhani informed the meeting that the work on reconstruction/rehabilitation of damaged roads along the newly laid storm water drains in DHA was going on in full swing. He said that road construction was a specialized engineering venture which involved certain time consuming stages including laying of foundation, resurfacing and re-sloping of roads etc before final carpeting is done.
The Administrator reiterated in un equivocal terms that the 50 Kms long road network being built in DHA at a cost of Rs. 700 million would be completed in all respects before 30 June’ 2009 positively.
The delegation was informed that after the verdict of Sindh High Court the modified design of Gizri Flyover is being changed in accordance with its original parameters. The flyover will now terminate at Kh-e-Shamsheer – Hafiz intersection instead of Total Petrol Pump. Senior Proj Dir DHA said that the process to address the stipulated environmental concerns as required by EPA has been initiated and the flyover project would be completed by Dec’ 2009.
The Administrator informed the delegation that the repair work of stalled DHA Desalination Project had been inordinately delayed due to lingering financial dispute between the Cogen Company and Plant’s Manufacturer. He said that the dispute resolution between the two stakeholders was getting closer and it is hoped that the project would soon become operational.
Administrator DHA stated that the security system in DHA/CBC areas was being revamped by DHA Vigilance with support of private security companies. He said that surveillance cameras are being stalled at ten major entry points of DHA and joint night patrolling in co-ordination with civil police has already started which has brought down the crime rate in DHA by 25%.
CEO CBC informed the meeting that a survey conducted revealed that 2500 manhole covers were missing at various locations in DHA. She said that the same are being replaced by newly manufactured versatile covers with improved specifications and strength. All the open holes in DHA would be covered and fixed by new covers in six weeks time.

Karachi: Administrator DHA Brig Khalid Tirmizi visited Zamzama residential and commercial areas in DHA on Tuesday at about mid night to see the effects of newly introduced modern civic concepts in the area.
The Administrator was accompanied by CEO CBC Ms Zeenat Ahmad and other concerned officials of DHA & CBC. It may be mentioned that Zamzama commercial and residential localities have been earmarked as model areas where the new contemporary civic services concept of night sweeping, solid waste management and upkeep/maintenance of civic utilities round the clock has been recently introduced on experimental basis. “My waste, my responsibility” is the main theme of the concept which envisages active involvement of residents in the entire process. The Administrator drove and largely walked through the nooks and corners of the area and was warmly greeted by the representatives of various residents’ associations present on the occasion.
Brig Tirmizi talking to the reps of various residents’ organizations said that overwhelming and whole hearted participation of residents was vital for success of the entire venture. He appreciated the efforts of the staff of CBC and the unstinted co-operation and support extended by the residents in making the venture a success. He said that the entire area was giving a neat and rejuvenated outlook which was encouraging.
The Administrator said that provision of clean, healthy and aesthetically vibrant living environment to the residents was DHA’s top most priority. He said that the experiment of introducing the reinvigorated cleaning project in Zamzama commercial and residential areas has been an astounding success. He added that the project would be extended to all areas under DHA and CBC jurisdiction in a phased programme. He said that the project has the potential of realizing the goals of healthy, vibrant and efficient civic life.
Earlier the project director, Addl CEO CBC Sardar Taimur Durrani and project contractor Mr. Atif Butt explained the contours and parameters of the project. He said that the comprehensive project encompassed a reinvigorated strategy of intensive night cleaning/sweeping, efficient garbage/debris collection, door to door waste collection and availability of a composite team to address the sewerage, street lights and road repairs problems round the clock.
The residents present on the occasion were unanimous in saying that since the introduction of a new civic services concept a new era of qualitative improvement in living environments has dawned in the area.
