Chief Minister (CM) Pervaiz Elahi on Sunday inaugurated the 8.7-kilometre long stretch of the Ring Road from Niazi Chowk to Mehmood Booti.
The CM said the first phase had been constructed at a cost of Rs 3 billion. He said Rs 80 billion would be spent on the entire project.
He said he had ordered the authorities concerned to buy land at market rates for the project. The Ring Road will link Allama Iqbal Airport, Wahga Border and the Sialkot-Lahore Motorway. He said the project would promote business and industrial activity. It would also improve flow of traffic, he added. He said the government had constructed six underpasses in the city, which improved flow of traffic.
The CM said Bakkar Mandi would be shifted outside the city after Eid.
He said the government would restore the Walled City and improve sewerage and sanitation facilities there. The construction of the Circular Road and the Ravi Road was under progress, he added.
He said Shahdara was a part of Lahore and it would be made a ‘satellite city’. He said the government had closed down the toll plaza on Saggian Bridge Pul and asked the National Highways Authority (NHA) to get rid of the toll plaza at Begum Kot.
He said the government had given proprietary rights to the people living in slums. He said the government would give Rs 10 million to each union council (UC) for development projects.
He said Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif had come into power twice, but left the country in social and economic turmoil. The PML had made the country politically and economically strong, he added.
Mr Elahi said the Pakistan Muslim League (PML) and its allies would re-elect President Pervez Musharraf in uniform for the next five years on October 6.
He said the opposition should respect the Supreme Court decision on the president holding two offices. Some lawyers were working against their profession and democracy by opposing the SC decision, he added.
The CM said, “Security was tight in Islamabad on September 27 and September 29, but political opponents had restored to violence.” He denounced the clashes between the police and lawyers, journalists and political workers in Islamabad on September 29.
