IHC orders CDA to follow standard safety measures

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday directed the authorities concerned of Capital Development Authority (CDA) to strictly adhere to standard safety measures at public places.

An IHC single-member bench of Justice Syed Intikhab Hussain Shah issued this directive on a writ moved by Tariq Mehmood through his counsel Advocate Hashmat Habib.

The counsel told the court that opening of an eatery at a public parking adjacent to Shaheed-e-Millat Secretariat was posing a threat to visitors, especially under current security situation.

He said the secretariat was renovated at a cost of Rs 500 million after a fire gutted it in 2003. He said recurrence of fire incident at the secretariat could not be ruled out.

Another IHC single-member bench of Justice Raja Saeed Akram Khan upheld decision of a sessions judge granting bail to two accused in a murder case.

The bench rejected plea of Abdul Hafeez, father of slain Naveed Anjum, who alleged that Nazakat Hussain and Mazhar Hussain murdered his son on February 11, 2005.

His counsel prayed to the court to set aside a July 18, 2005 decision of the sessions judge, under which was the accused was released on bail.

Meanwhile, The IHC on Thursday allowed Election Committee to hold Islamabad High Court Bar Association (IHCBA) elections scheduled for April 18, besides accommodating the petitioners in the voters’ lists.

The single bench of Justice Syed Qalbe Hassan issued the direction on a set of writ petitions moved by three candidates against removal of their names from the list of aspirants contesting different offices of IHCBA.

Barrister Masroor Shah, Waqas Ahmed and Hassan Ilyas Kaifi had filed the pleas. app
