ISLAMABAD, Jan 18: Police on Tuesday told the Supreme Court (SC) that the names of its inspector general of police (IGP) and property tycoon Malik Riaz Hussain were included in a case of arresting Malik Tabarak Bari in 2009.
The SC three-member bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, Justice Khalilur Rehman Ramday and Justice Ghulam Rabbani was hearing a contempt plea against Maher Munawar Ali, former SHO of Kohsar police station, for not following the court`s directive in the case.
Advocate Sardar Asmatullah Khan told Dawn that the former SHO informed the bench that the names of IGP Syed Kaleem Imam and Malik Riaz were included in the case diary, attached with the FIR registered on charges of PPCs 382, 409 and 506 on November 11, 2009 regarding the arrest of Mr Bari.
In his complaint, Mr Bari, a property tycoon, had alleged that he was arrested from his house in E-7 on October 24, 2009 on the directives of IGP and Mr Hussain in a case registered against him with Sohrab Goth, Karachi police.
He said the SHO failed to include the names of the two in the FIR.
The court disposed of a suo motu it took over the arrest of Mr Bari`s arrest in December 2009, as the case registered against him in Karachi had already been quashed.
For the next hearing on January 21, the court asked for submitting an inquiry report by a former district and sessions judge, Islamabad, into the killing of Mohammad Fayaz, a security guard of Malik Riaz, during a land dispute in Sihala.
The report also probed the allegations of land grabbing against Malik Riaz.
The security guard`s wife, Shamraza Bibi, was ordered to appear before the court on the next hearing with details of compensation given to her by Malik Riaz.
The court had earlier asked her to distribute Rs24 million given to her in compensation according to Shariat and deposit the share of her children in their bank accounts.
