Prices skyrocket ahead of Ramazan

A SURGE in the prices of fruits, vegetables and chicken meat was observed in Sunday bazaars ahead of Ramazan while unavailability of sugar was also witnessed.

Despite the government’s claims, sugar was not seen in the Sunday bazaars. The vendors said it was impossible for them to sell sugar in bazaars at the rates fixed by the government while the open market rates were higher.

The prices of vegetables had increased in the makeshift bazaars this week amid the shortage of some vegetables. Sale of second and third grade fruits and vegetables continued in the bazaars while no price revision was observed till 1 pm in the majority of Sunday bazaars.

A survey conducted by The News in the various Sunday bazaars of the city found the vendors overcharging. The acute shortage of garlic and lemon was also witnessed. These commodities could be stored for a longer time that’s how their artificial shortage was created to increase the profit margin. Only lower quality garlic and rotten lemon were sold at first grade rates as there was no check by the city district government on the vendors who were charging very high prices than the official rates.

The meat sellers had not installed nets at their shops and continued their business as per routine. The price of chicken meat in Sunday bazaars had reached at Rs 193 per kg while in the open market it was Rs 190 per kg. The difference shows that the negligence on the part of livestock department of the City District Government, Lahore, which always fixed higher prices than the open market.

Sugar price with further increase of Re one was fixed at Rs 52 to 53 per kg from Rs 51 to 52 per kg.

Masoor pulse price was fixed at Rs 102 to 110 per kg while it was sold at Rs 120 to Rs 130 per kg and the price of masoor imported was fixed at Rs 92 to 97 per kg and sold at Rs 110 per kg. Masoor (Desi) was not seen in Sunday bazaars. Its price in the wholesale market was Rs 160 per kg that’s why vendors did not bring it in the makeshift market.

Lentil (unwashed) price was gained by Rs 3 per kg and fixed at Rs 98 to Rs 102 per kg while lentil (washed) rate was fixed at Rs 102 to 107 per kg and lentil (whole) rate was fixed at Rs 84 to 87 per kg from Rs 82 to 86 per kg.

Gram pulse price was fixed at Rs 39 to 43 per kg from Rs 40 to 43 per kg. The price of chilli powder was Rs 90 to 95 per kg from Rs 80 to 88 per kg. The price of gram powder was fixed at Rs 41 to 44 per kg. Rice Basmati (386) price was fixed at Rs 39 to Rs 40 per kg but it was sold at Rs 41 to 43 per kg. Rice Super Basmati (new) price was reduced by Rs 2 per kg and fixed at Rs 62 to 64 per kg and its lower quality was sold at Rs 66 to 68 per kg while Super Basmati (old) price was fixed at Rs 72 to 77 per kg but it was missing in the makeshift markets.

The price of potato was gained by Rs 6 per kg and fixed at Rs 28 to 32 per kg from Rs 22 to 26 per kg and potato (stored) rate was increased by Rs 2 per kg and fixed at Rs 16 to 18 per kg from Rs 14 to 16 per kg. The vendors sold potato by mixing at Rs 32 per kg.

The price of onion was also increased by Rs 3 per kg and fixed at Rs 18 to 20 per kg from Rs 15 to 17 per kg and vendors sold it by mixing different qualities at Rs 20 per kg.

The green chilli price was further gained by Rs 8 to 7 per kg and fixed at Rs 45 to 55 per kg from Rs 40 to 48 per kg while it was sold at Rs 55 to 60 per kg.

The price of tomato was reduced by Re 1 to Rs 8 per kg and fixed at Rs 25 to 28 per kg and sold at Rs 28 per kg.

Garlic (Desi) price was fixed at Rs 80 to 85 per kg from Rs 78 to 82 per kg while it was sold at Rs 100 per kg and garlic (China) was fixed at Rs 85 to 90 per kg after gaining Rs 10 per kg from Rs 75 to 80 per kg.

The price of ginger (China) was fixed at Rs 78 to 85 per kg from Rs 84 to 90 per kg and ginger (Thai) rate was fixed at Rs 75 to 77 per kg.

The price of spinach was fixed at Rs 7 to 8 pr kg from Rs 6 to 7 per kg but it was missing in the market. Brinjal price was fixed at Rs 12 to 14 per kg and sold at Rs 16 per kg.

Cucumber price was fixed at Rs 24 to 32 per kg from Rs 20 to 28 per kg from and sold at Rs 32 to 36 per kg. Pumpkin price was fixed at Rs 35 to 40 per kg. Bitter gourd rate was Rs 30 to 36 per kg.

Capsicums price gained by Rs 4 per kg and fixed at Rs 34 to 38 per kg from Rs 30 to 34 per but missing in majority of bazaars.

Ladyfinger price was fixed Rs 28 to 34 per kg from Rs 30 to 36 per kg and sold Rs 34 per kg.

Arum price was reduced by Rs 2 per kg and fixed at Rs 20 to 22 per kg from Rs 20 to 24 per kg.

The price of lemon (Desi) was gained by Rs 8 per kg and fixed at Rs 50 to 68 per kg from Rs 50 to 60 per kg while rotten lemon was sold at Rs 68 per kg and good quality at Rs 100 per kg.

Cabbage price was Rs 35 to 40 per kg from Rs 34 to 36 per kg and cauliflower price was fixed at Rs 30 to 36 per kg from 30 to 35 per kg. Peas price was fixed at Rs 84 to 88 per kg from Rs 85 to 100 per kg

The price of different varieties of apple was fixed at Rs 26 to 75 per kg from Rs 30 to 70 per kg and average price of lower quality apples in Sunday bazaars was Rs 60 per kg.

The price of banana was Rs 20 to 40 per dozen and low quality was sold at Rs 35 per dozen.

Different varieties of mangoes price was fixed at Rs 24 to 60 per kg from Rs 20 to 55 per kg while average price of it was Rs 40 to Rs 50 per kg.

The price of apricot was fixed at Rs 90 to 105 per kg from Rs 80 to 100 per kg and it was not seen in majority of makeshift markets.

Plump price was fixed at Rs 110 to 135 per kg from Rs 90 to 130 per kg while it was also missing in the majority of Sunday bazaars.

The rate of peach was fixed at Rs 55 to 75 per kg from Rs 60 to 70 per kg while lower average price was Rs 65 per kg.

Grapes price was fixed at Rs 60 to 115 per kg while grapes Sudarkhani was sold at Rs 115 per kg and other quality was not seen.

The price of pomegranate was fixed at Rs 32 to 50 per kg from Rs 40 to 45 per kg and sold at Rs 50 per kg and guava was fixed at Rs 22 to 28 per kg from Rs 20 to 28 per kg.

The price of dates was fixed at Rs 85 to 125 per kg from 70 to 105 per kg while average price of it was Rs 90 per kg.
