Rawalpindi: Widening of Airport Road: FWO directed to complete project by Sep 21

RAWALPINDI: Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) Director General Makeen Shahbaz on Thursday expressed concern over slow pace of work on Rs 1396 million Airport Road widening and remodelling project and asked the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) to complete the project by September 21.

The RDA DG visited the project site along with officials of RDA and FWO, where he was briefed by the FWO officials about the construction work of Airport Road and a flyover, which was being built on Railway Bridge at Rahimabad.

Shahbaz was informed that widening and remodelling of the road from Kutchery Chowk to Chohan Chowk would be completed by the end of this month.

The FWO officials sought more time to complete the project as the authority had fixed September 21 deadline. The RDA chief refused the request saying no further delay would be tolerated and no extension in time limit would be granted as the project had already been delayed for four months.

He said Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Shahbaz Sharif had directed to complete the project within stipulated timeframe. The CM, he added, had also directed to work in three shifts.

The RDA chief directed the FWO to install urban traffic control signals on the road. He also called for installation of security cameras on the road before its opening for the general public. He directed the FWO to ensure lane safety measures for the convenience of people.

He also called for avoiding unnecessary U-turns on the road and urged the FWO engineers to follow international standard of traffic engineering.

According to the RDA sources, the road had been completed from Jinnah Park to Ammar Chowk and construction work was underway from Ammar Chowk to Flying Club Morr besides flyover at Rahimabad Railway Bridge, which could consume three more months.
