Residents of sectors I-9, I-10 face acute water shortage

ISLAMABAD: Despite the efforts of Capital Development Authority (CDA) to ensure smooth water supply, the residents of sectors I-9 and I-10 are still facing acute water shortage during peak summer season.

The water consumption increases manifold during summer months, however, its shortage has multiplied the sufferings of the residents; compelling many of them to install water bore pumps at their houses.

When contacted, Director General Water Management Wing, Sanaullah Aman told APP on Thursday that the major reason of disrupted water supply is unscheduled load shedding on the express feeder, which is running 22 tube wells to supply water to the residents of I-9 and I-10.

He said the express feeder worth Rs 9 million was installed, on the directives of CDA Chairman Imtiaz Inayat Elahi, to meet the growing demand of water in the worst affected sectors. It was agreed that the feeder will be exempted from loadshedding to ensure smooth water supply, however, the hours-long unscheduled loadshedding by Islamabad Electricity Supply Company (IESCO) is continuously disrupting water supply in the area, Aman said.

He said the civic body has provided five additional water tankers to meet the growing demand of water and set up two complaint centres to address the grievances of residents.

Although, the water consumption increases manifold during hot summer months but lavish use of water by the residents is also another major reason water shortage.

Aman said that CDA, under its ongoing campaign to save water, has disconnected 480 illegal connections and 125 water dragging motors installed at various places.

However, the CDA Enforcement is taking actions against the illegal connections at Agro farms and hotels located at Murree Road, Bhara Kahu and surrounding areas, he said.

CDA teams are regularly visiting different sectors in morning and evening to monitor use of water by the residents. The challans are being issued by the authority’s magistrate to those who waste water on washing cars, gardening and other chores and those who will not avoid lavish use of water with a warning to disconnect their lines. The campaign is aimed at making citizens more responsible for utilizing water resources and saving this precious commodity, he added.
