Speaker tells govt to let Kazmi attend session

ISLAMABAD: National Assembly Speaker Fehmida Mirza has asked the government to allow Hamid Saeed Kazmi, the former minister for religious affairs, to attend the joint session of parliament on Tuesday and subsequent sittings of the lower house.

Dr Mirza issued a production order for Mr Kazmi on Monday and sent a copy to the secretary, ministry of interior affairs. The Federal Investigation Agency had arrested Mr Kazmi on March 15 after rejection of his bail by Special Judge Central (SJC) Sohail Nasir in the Haj corruption case.

Our Staff Reporter adds: Mr Kazmi has been moved to a safe place on a written request by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik told reporters on Monday that the FIA jail where Mr Kazmi was previously lodged was vulnerable to terrorist attack, adding that Mr Kazmi had been attacked by terrorists when he was a member of the federal cabinet.

He did not mention the location where Mr Kazmi had been moved, but said he was under safe custody and custody means jail.

In reply to a question, Mr Malik said that neither was he involved in the Haj scam nor had he sent anybody on Haj.

He said the Bahria Town’s owner had provided funds for journalists to perform Haj and he had only helped intending pilgrims obtain visas.

In reply to a question about target killings in Karachi, he said under the Constitution it was the responsibility of provincial governments to maintain law and order. The federal government only provided them help.

The minister said that Indian authorities had agreed to allow the Pakistan Commission to visit New Delhi and verify the first statement of Ajmal Kassab.
