Karachi: The unprecedented monsoon downpour which started on Saturday brought havoc to the city’s civic infrastructure and caused inundation of large areas. The quantum of rain water was so much that initially the drains overflowed causing flooding in many areas. DHA and CBC responded to the challenge with remarkable agility and brought the situation to normal within 24 hours of the rains.
Administrator DHA Brig Khalid Tirmizi and CEO CBC Zeenat Ahmad undertook an erstwhile tour of each nook and corner of DHA on Sunday night to see the effects of rain and pace of ongoing dewatering and relief operation.
The accumulated rain water has fastly receded and 95% of DHA’s and CBC areas are largely clear. All the major roads in DHA are also clear.
The fast return to normalcy after rains has validated the efficacy of the newly laid drainage system in DHA which worked with remarkable efficiency and provided a way for speedy drainage of a very large volume of water. The timely deployment of dewatering and other relief equipment and the determined efforts of CBC & DHA Staff involved in the gigantic operation were instrumental in success of the dewatering venture.
The equipment involved in the operation included suction pumps; water sludge tankers, cesspool vehicles and tractors etc. There was partial flooding cum localized ponding in some deep and low lying areas. Pumping operation is being undertaken to drain out the accumulated rain water from these areas.
The areas affected in DHA were mainly parts of DHA Ph-IV and portions of Kh-e-Shahbaz. The localized ponding in Kh-e-Bahria, Comm Avenue, 12th Lane, Badar Commercial & Tauheed Commercial is being cleared on top priority.
Administrator DHA urged DHA and CBC staff to continue working with renewed determination and commitment to bring relief to the residents in shortest possible time. He specifically lauded the efforts of CEO CBC and her staff for the remarkable work carried out to combat the rain emergency situation.
Administrator directed that accumulated rain water in open plots be pumped out earliest in the second phase followed by spray and fumigation of cleared areas.
