The Traffic Engineering and Planning Agency (TEPA) is conducting a feasibility of an underpass in place of the culvert, under the rail track, connecting Cantt and Gulberg. The underpass will link Hussain Chowk to Khurshid Alam Road.
The project will cost Rs 450 million.
TEPA chief engineer Khushhal Khan told Daily Times on Wednesday that the underpass was a part of Access Route II, a project planned in 1992. Access Route II was planned to link Gaddafi Stadium to Allama Iqbal International Airport through Liberty Chowk, Hussain Chowk, Khurshid Alam Road, RA Bazaar and Bedian Road, he added.
He said the increasing number of vehicles had been causing traffic jams in the city. The government would construct the underpass on priority to minimise traffic jams, he added.
He said the government had discussed the construction of the underpass with the military and both had agreed to the plan.
Khushhal Khan said traffic in Gulberg and Cantt was tick. He said traffic jams were common on Jinnah Bridge before iftar and also two hours later. People had to take detour from Park Lane Road towards Hussain Chowk to reach Cavalry Ground’s Chowk through Guru Mangat Road, he added.
He said the underpass would provide people with another alternative to reach their destinations without taking detours.
He said there were two major barriers in the city – the Canal and the railway track. The government should construct underpasses and overhead bridges to bypass these barriers, he added.
