Sheikh Afzal agrees to settle liabilities, SC informed
ISLAMABAD: The counsel for Haris Afzal, on Thursday, again gave assurance to the Supreme Court (SC) that all the liabilities and amounts against Sheikh Afzal, one of the main accused in the Bank of Punjab (BoP) Rs 9 billion loan case, and his family would be settled.
A three-member bench, comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Amir Hani Muslim and Justice Ghulam Rabbani, heard Rs 9 billion BoP loan scam case.
During the hearing, Khawaja Tariq Rahim, counsel for Haris Afzal, informed the court that Sheikh Afzal and his family had agreed to settle the dispute with BoP regarding the payment of money they had borrowed from the bank. Khawaja Haris, counsel for BoP, told the bench that total amount against Sheikh Afzal and his family was Rs 8.43 billion, and so far they had identified their properties worth Rs 5.5 billion.
The committee was directed to continue its work, if all the liabilities against the bank were not settled completely. Khawaja Haris complained that despite the court’s orders, Sheikh Haris Afzal did not appear before the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) team. “Therefore, Sheikh Afzal’s properties in DHA could not be sold,” he added. The court directed Haris Afzal to cooperate with the committee and appear before the DHA for the sale of properties.
The court directed Khawaja Tariq Rahim that although he had met Justice (r) Jamshaid, he should send him a written apology for leveling baseless and unfounded charges against him besides employing unceremonious language in a letter written to the honourable judge by Haris Afzal, and also submit a copy of it to the court.
The court also directed the learned counsel to apologise from Uzair Bhandari, who represented Sheikh Afzal’s family in the Salvage Committee, but later quit when Haris Afzal leveled unfounded and baseless charges against him as well. The BoP has been ordered to nominate its representative for Salvage Committee, while Khawaja Tariq Rahim informed that Haris Afzal to represent the Sheikh Afzal and his family. The court adjourned the hearing for two weeks.
