The Capital Development Authority (CDA) is preparing a proposal for construction of a tunnel between Parliament House and Parliamentary Lodges, CDA Chairman Kamran Lashari said on Monday. Lashari said that National Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Amir Hussain had directed the authority to prepare a feasibility report on the project. “The authority is working on the proposal and the proposal may be submitted to the speaker by the end of this year,” he said.
The idea was first presented in 1997 when the cost was estimated at around Rs 88 million, another CDA official said, adding that a tunnel has not been included in proposed projects for the current fiscal year, but it may be started on a priority basis if the decision is taken. The official said that the cost of a tunnel project would be much higher than that estimated in 1997. A tunnel will provide an underground road link between the Parliament House and Parliamentary Lodges, where the number of residing parliamentarians will increase after construction of an additional 100 lodges. The CDA has approved the PC-1 of the proposed additional lodges and is due to start construction work soon, the official said. The official said that a tunnel would ease problems currently experienced as parliamentarians and other visitors have to wait in queues outside the parliament and occasionally traffic jams are also caused on Constitution Avenue.
