Inter Collegiate Bilingual Declamation Contest 2009 at Defence Authority Degree College

Karachi: An Inter Collegiate Bilingual Declamation Contest 2009 was held at Defence Authority Degree College here today. Students of more than twenty leading educational institutions of the city participated in the contest. Ms Shazia Marri, Information Minister, Govt. of Sind was the Chief Guest on the occasion.
Addressing the audience, the Information Minister said that public speaking played a vital role in developing students’ confidence and personality. She said that oratory was a great art and was instrumental in imparting self reliance and leadership qualities in students. She advised the students to have belief in their own strength, traditions and way of life and to face the onslaught of problems in life with self assurance and moving spirits.
Referring to the content of the speeches made she said “Although the overall national scenario is grim, but we must accept it as challenge, respond positively and be optimistic in life”. She also added that a great deal of responsibility for training, educating and character building of our children rests with the institutions and educators.
Ms Marri said that as a nation we have great potential adding that only the need was to have belief in ourselves. She said that if one masters his own self he could master the world.
Earlier, the Principal of the College, Capt. (Retd) Ahmed Zaheer, PN, said that development of public speaking skills was an important element at all levels in the education curriculum, universally. He said that public speaking provided the students a forum for enlightening mind and developing leadership qualities in them.
He added that such co-curricular activities infuse in them the spirit of acceptance and develop their creative and innovative abilities to make them responsible citizens.
In the English declamation, Amna Tabrez of Fazaia College secured first position, Sana Saleem of PECHS Girls College stood second and Bushra Tauseef of Defence Authority O&A Level School was declared third. Faryal Qureshi of Hamdard College of Science & Commerce was given a consolation Prize.
In the Urdu declamation, Nadia Abdullah of Sir Syed Girls College stood first, Syeda Shahzadi Ramsha of DA Degree College Ph-VII Ext got the second position and Madiha Mobin of Karachi University was declared third. Haris Bin Yousuf of Fazaia Degree College was given a consolation Prize.
The overall coveted trophy of the Declamation Contest 2009 was won by Sir Syed Girls College. In the end the chief guest Ms Shazia Marri gave away the prizes to the winning teams and distributed certificates amongst the participants of the Declamation Contest. Dir Education DHA Brig (R) Iftikhar Arshad presented a crest of the college to the chief guest.
