Lahore: Commercialisation on 20 roads banned

LAHORE – The Punjab government has completely banned commercialisation on 20 roads in LDA residential areas falling in different housing schemes in line with the new commercialisation policy recently notified by the department of housing & urban development and public health engineering.

Most of the roads fall in Johar Town and Sabzazar schemes. Other roads facing ban include from Multan Road to Naqsha Stop, Khiabaneh Jinnah Road starting from Shaukat Khanam Hospital and Raiwind Road. All illegal commercial buildings already constructed on 20 roads will also be pulled down in different phases.

No one will be allowed to convert these residential areas in commercial venues in future. Sources revealed that decision to ban commercialisation on the roads was taken during the meeting of commercialisation committee headed by Lahore Division Commissioner Khusru Pervaiz. LDA DG Shahid
Mehmood, Chief Metropolitan Planner Aftab Ahmed Khan, DCO Lahore Sajjad Ahmed Bhutta, LDA Director Town Planner Abdul Qauyum Sheikh, Khalid Mehmood Sheikh, CDGL District Officer Muzamil Ishtiaq and other officers attended the meeting.

The sources informed that after 2-year ban, the Punjab government had announced new commercialization policy. Before the ban, a comprehensive survey was conducted to collect information about commercial
buildings, markets and business institutions on 58 roads that belonged to housing schemes in LDA controlled areas.

Authority concerned has declared 58 roads as commercial in the controlled areas of the Lahore Development Authority. Under the new commercialization policy, buildings and plots around the 58 roads will be commercialised. New commercialisation will be allowed with maximum 4 kanal and minimum 2 kanal size of plots on these roads. Out of total roads, 10 roads are predominantly residential areas while 48 roads are predominantly already commercialised.

The 58 roads declared commercial included Main Boulevard Gulberg, Stadium Road Gulberg-III, MM Alam Road (from Main Boulevard to Firdous Market) Gulerbg-III, Syed Hussain Shheed Soharwardi Road (Main
Boulevard New Garden Town), College Road Gulberg (From Sherpao Bridge to Main Boulevard Gulberg), Main Market Road upto Plot No 40-F (Gulberg-II), Park Road Gulberg to Firdous Market up to Jinnah Bridge, Gurumangat Road, Road from PACE to ChenOne Junction (Gulberg III), Shabbir Ahmed Usmani Road (from Y Juntion Gardne Town to Maulana Shaukat Ali Road) Ferozepur Road (from Canal Bridge to Hadiara Drain), Jail Road/ Gulberg Road (from Ferozepur Road to Sherpao Bridge).
