Lecture of Lt Gen (R) Tanwir Naqvi on education at Degree College for Women, Ph-VIII

Karachi: ‘Education is the process and product of development of human mind to solve various problems of life. The basic purpose of education is to nurture and grow the analytical faculties of mind so that it can find logical and appropriate answers to various problems of daily life’.
This was the gist of Lt. Gen (R) Tanwir Naqvi’s lecture, purpose and elements of education, which he delivered at Defence Authority Degree College For Women Ph-VIII here today. The soldier cum scholar, the General is a former Chief of National Reconciliation Bureau.
Highlighting the efficacy of education he said that the function of education was to impart knowledge which constitute the basic laws of nature and could not be forgetten once comprehended in its essence. He said that apart from knowledge the rest was information of different subjects and discipline. He said that knowledge was catalyst in perceiving and comprehending the information.
He said that the end product of education was wisdom which was the product of knowledge and reasoning. ‘It is the faculty to differentiate between wrong and right and the ability of a person to decide and adopt the right course of action’, he added.
He attributed courage as the singular trait of education adding that education was of no worth if it did not develop and nurtured courage in individuals. ‘Courage implies the ability to put to risk what one dears the most’, he added. He said that hallmark of education was to develop and produce good communication skills in an individual, the ability to communicate one’s ideas clearly and effectively.
He exhorted the teachers to stress single mindedly on developing the faculty of independent thinking in students. He said that teachers should develop inquisitiveness and curiosity in students so that they could themselves discover and explore knowledge. ‘No questions however absurd and irrelevant it appears is a stupid question,’ he remarked.
Gen (R) Tanweer asked the educationist of the country to consider introducing logic in the curriculum as a subject at various levels of education. He said that logic as a separate subject was included in various four years undergraduate programmes in USA.
He asked the teachers to grow younger people into more reliable and responsible citizens. He said that reliability was a commitment to a higher value system of supporting and upholding the truth. He further said that training the students to honour the contracts would enable them to become law abiding and responsible citizens.
He concluded by stating that the end product of education was to produce confident, enlightened, self reliant and dynamic individuals who could become useful citizens of society.
