LHC issues notice to govt on plea against Liberty plaza

LAHORE: Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed of Lahore High Court on Wednesday issued pre-admission notices to the Punjab government and other respondents on a petition challenging the establishment of the Liberty Park and Ride Shopping Plaza in the Liberty Market.

Judge directed the respondents to file the replies until February 17.

The petition is moved by seven petitioners including the chairman of a law firm Muhammad Azhar Siddiqui, shop owners Muhammad Saleem Hafeez, Mian Muhammad Haroon of Hotel MelRose Inn, Arshad Kareem Qureshi of Toy Land, M Zakariya Basheer Malik, Arif Mehmood of Liberty Gift Centre, Syed Dilawar Shah of Alnafay Shopping Mall situated at commercial zone, Liberty Market.

The petition is filed against the government of Punjab through its secretary law and parliamentary affairs, housing, urban development and public health engineering department, Lahore Development Authority (LDA) through its chairman, Parks and Horticultural Authority (PHA) through its chairman, LDA estate management director, Traffic Engineering and Planning Agency (TEPA) director and the provincial environmental protection agency.

Petitioners’ counsel Muhammad Azhar Siddique submitted that the land was an open space owned by the PHA, which was illegally transferred to LDA. He said the plaza also housed shops, which was badly affecting the petitioners. He requested that the plaza be declared an open space still in the ownership of the PHA and that all subsequent transactions or transfers by any authority nullified.
