LAHORE, March 8: The National Logistic Cell (NLC) started on Thursday the collection of toll tax from commuters at the newly-established 17 toll plazas on a 40km long stretch of the Lahore Ring Road (LRR).
“The Ring Road project management has awarded the toll collection contract for one year to the NLC,” Lahore Commissioner Jawad Rafique Malik told Dawn.
Mr Malik, who also holds an additional charge of the Ring Road project director, said the NLC administration had been advised to initially charge Rs10 from a car, Rs25 from a wagon/mini loader and Rs45 from a truck/bus. Motorcycle riders would remain exempt from the toll tax till a final decision was not taken to allow them or not on the Ring Road, he said.
He said the reason for charging a nominal toll tax from commuters was to make them habitual of paying tax to the government. “We may increase the toll tax with the passage of time,” he added.
The commissioner said the project management might change the location of newly-constructed toll plazas after assessing the situation in relation to traffic congestion and the smooth traffic flow.
“It is a pilot toll tax project and we will expand it by establishing more toll plazas after getting a feedback from officials and the commuters,” he said.
