NSC to meet on 28th

ISLAMABAD: The National Security Council (NSC) is scheduled to meet on February 28 to decide on constitutional issues, the Balochistan situation and water reservoirs, sources told Daily Times on Saturday.

They said the meeting was likely to approve reviewing the constitution primarily for defusing the simmering situation in Balochistan, discuss the country’s law and order, take a final decision on big water reservoirs including Kalabagh Dam and deliberate upon the India-Pakistan composite dialogue process. President Gen Pervez Musharraf would chair the meeting, they said, adding, “Te president had convened the meeting for February 15, but it has now been rescheduled for February 28.”

Sources said Kashmir and Northern Areas Affairs Minister Makhdoom Faisal Saleh Hayat would brief the meeting on the Northern Areas law and order, particularly the situation after the assassination of a Shia leader early last month in Gilgit.

Faisal Saleh would talk about the measures taken by the federal government to prevention such incidents in future, they added. “He will also brief the NSC on the overall situation in Kashmir viz-a-viz the area’s development,” they said.

Interior Minister Aftab Khan Sherpao would also brief the meeting about the country’s general law and order, they added.

Before the NSC meeting, a daylong informal meeting of the cabinet would be held tomorrow (Monday) to finalise recommendations on the constitutional amendments on Balochistan, they said. “The cabinet is likely to discuss the report of the special committee of parliament on Balochistan and its proposed constitutional amendments and other measures. The cabinet will then sent its recommendations to the NSC meeting,” sources added.

The cabinet would also discuss prospects of holding a joint sitting of parliament and the government’s strategy to save the president from the opposition’s onslaught, which was witnessed during the last address of the president to the joint sitting of parliament, they said.

Similarly, sources said that the cabinet would also finalise its recommendations for building big dams in the country and forward its recommendations to the NSC. According to them, the third important agenda of the NSC meeting would be a comprehensive review of the current India-Pakistan composite dialogue process. “The proposed bus service between Muzaffarabad and Srinagar and India’s decision to start talking to Pakistan and other countries on gas pipelines will be discussed in the meeting,” sources added.

At the time of the NSC meeting, Indian Foreign Minister Natwar Singh would have completed his visit to Pakistan, they said, adding, “The NSC will review the progress made in Mr Singh’s visit to Pakistan and will then review the India-Pakistan dialogue process.”
