One killed, over 200 hurt in I-Day festivities

Wheelies and stunt-making claimed a life and injured over 200 others during the Independence Day celebrations on Friday in the city.

Asghar Ali, 17, son of Shaukat Ali, a resident of Kot Lakhpat, came on the Ferozpur Road along with his friends on his motorbike to celebrate the I-Day. As he reached near the Model Town Mor in the Naseerabad police limits, he started doing wheelies. He lost control and hit the footpath. As a result, he sustained serious head injury and died on the spot. The body was handed back to the deceased’s family without autopsy.

During Independence Day celebrations, the revellers flouted ban on one-wheeling and stunt-making. Resultantly, over 200 youths were injured in over 40 road traffic accident accidents. I-Day celebrators also played hide and seek with the jawans of Lahore Police deployed to maintain law and order and implement ban on one-wheeling and eve-teasing in the provincial metropolis. Youths came out on roads in groups to avoid police action. However, police managed to impound scores of motorcycles and motorcyclists in different police stations of the city.

Moreover, a man, who had gone to Wahga Border to see the flag-hoisting ceremony, passed out due to hot and humid weather. The Rescuers shifted him to Ghurki Hospital for first aid. Roaring motorbikes, fluttering flags, glittering buildings and gleaming smiles electrified the otherwise ‘loadshedded’ day and evening of August 14 as the city celebrated the Independence Day in a typical Lahori fashion.

As the day progressed towards night, more and more people were seen flocking towards the popular spots such as Shahrah-e-Quid-e-Azam, Fortress Stadium, and Liberty Market. The city atmosphere was filled with the deafening sound of Pakistan Zindabad and Jeevay Jeevay Pakistan.

Some were carried away and stopped their vehicles in the middle of The Mall and started dancing to tunes of national songs. The preparations had started days before the 14th of August and they reached full swing on Friday as youth, children and elderly expressed their happiness decorating their houses, streets and all the places they could get their hands on with National Flags. Many ceremonies and celebrations were held all across the city to celebrate the Independence Day. A number of renowned artists including film stars and stage artistes showed up at a ceremony organized by the CafÈ Mondalano to celebrate the Independence Day at the end of which a big birthday cake was cut. The artistes shared gifts and sweets rejoicing the spirit of freedom. Almost all the government buildings including the Wapda house, the Governor’s House, Punjab Assembly, Town Hall and others were decorated with colourful lights and huge national flags.

Flocks of youth were seen on the city roads on bikes and cars decorated with the National Flag playing national songs loudly. Many had painted their faces and bodies green and white and were chanting ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ in exuberance. Many rural folks from the outskirts had also poured into the city and celebrated the night in their individual fashion taking to the roads on their beautifully decorated tractors. A number of families were seen roaming the city in their vehicles and on foot enjoying the flamboyant and exciting environment.

Many took the opportunity to celebrate by dining out with their families and viewing the beautifully decorated city. The rickshaw drivers’ community like always took out their own rally with hundreds of flags put up on them. A fleet of beautifully decorated horse drawn-buggies were also further beautifying the already stunning environment.

The city police played a vital role to keep the celebrations in a way that they don’t cause any inconvenience. The Shahrah-e-Quid-e-Azam was strictly guarded and the police brought sanity to the proceedings after the jubilant masses clogged The Mall at midnight in their dancing and roaring celebrations. However like always, the Lahori spirit defeated all odds of the heat of the summer and the torture of loadshedding and celebrated the Independence Day in traditional enthusiastic style.
