ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali has directed the Ministry of Railways to speed up work on the Chaman-Kandahar railway line and connect the port city of Gwadar to the railway network.
He issued this direction in a meeting with Minister for Railways Ghaus Bakhsh Mahar who called on him here on Thursday. Completion of Chaman-Kandahar railway line would provide direct railway connections to the energy-rich states of Central Asia, observed the PM.
He said in the era of regional blocs, this railway line would prove to be the backbone of communication link between Pakistan, Afghanistan and the ECO region. This will give boost to economic activities, ensuring quick transportation of transit trade goods and providing job opportunities to the people of the area, he added.
The PM enquired from the minister about the progress on dualisation of Lodhran-Khanewal railway track and directed him to complete this project by June this year. He also enquired about the new signal system that shall be introduced into the PR network in order to ensure fast railway journey during fog.
Mahar informed the PM that in the last six months, the PR earned Rs 270 million more than the corresponding period last year. He renewed the commitment that railways will be turned into a customer-friendly service.
