SC bars CDA from building CEC’s house in Judges’s Colony

* Shows concerns that building of house could increase security problems

ISLAMABAD: Construction of a house for Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) in Judges Colony has been postponed till 2013 after the orders from Supreme Court (SC) to stop construction of houses for CEC and relevant officials. The SC raised apprehensions that the construction of his house could lead to security problems in the area.

According to sources, Capital Development Authority (CDA) allocated a plot measuring 1.5 Kanal in Judges Colony but it was not contracted. When present CEC Justice (r) Hamid Ali Mirza assumed charge of his office, Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) instructed CDA to construct the house for the CEC.

CDA replied that it would first get permission from SC to avoid any confusion during construction and in future but ECP office told CDA to start the construction work because they had informed the SC.

The CDA started survey and was preparing feasibility for the construction of the house and it was also finalised to start the construction but in the meantime SC asked CDA what they were doing in the Judges Colony and when answered that they were going to construct a residence for CEC.

The SC stopped CDA from any kind of construction in Judges Colony. The reason was told that construction of such houses could create security problems in this colony.

After this objection, CDA stopped the construction work the construction work of this residence will be started after two years, they added.

An officer of CDA on condition of anonymity confirmed that CDA was about to start the construction of the residence but after the orders from SC it was not possible to start construction work till 2013.

Do not know any thing about this issue: This correspondent sent a text message to registrar SC Faqeer Hussain and made a call on his cell number as well but he did not receive did not replied till filing of this news. Additional Registrar SC Qazi Sajid Mehmood said that he did not have any information about SC orders to CDA to stop construction of the residence.
