UK companies to invest in ports, shipping sector

ISLAMABAD: Baber Khan Ghauri, the federal communication minister, said Monday that a number of British companies are interested in investing in the communication sector particularly in ports development, shipping and highways.

Talking to reporters after meeting British High Commissioner to Pakistan, Mr Ghauri said British companies are also interested to invest in cargo handling and oil terminals. Mark Lyall Grant, British high commissioner, met the minister and discussed possibilities for investment.

The minister assured Mr Grant of a conducive investment environment for British companies and said, “the government will provide every possible facility to British investors.” The minister said that positive economic indicators in the country are attracting foreign investment in the country and we shall welcome British investment in the communication sector.

Mr Grant appreciated the government efforts for economic stability, saying, various measures by the recent governments have improved the economic situation in Pakistan.

Mr Ghauri said one British company, P&O is already working in Pakistan and the government will sincerely consider any future workable proposals by British companies.

“We have also offered them to explore investment opportunities in highways and motorways,” the minister said. To a question, the minister said, investment in Gwadar Port also came under discussion in the meeting.

He said the government was paying special heed to develop communication links with Asian as well as the Central Asian Republics (CARs).

“Pakistan will also be linked to 32 Asian countries through a road network in near future,” the minister said.

To reach out to Central Asian Republics, work on Jalalabad-Torkham road has already been started with a special focus on linking Gwadar port to the CARs through the roads network.

The minister thanked Mr Grant for United Kingdom’s support for Pakistan in its readmission to Commonwealth.

Mr Ghauri also apprised the high commissioner of the roads infrastructure in the country and government efforts to strengthen communication links with other countries to boost trade and bilateral ties.
