Peshawar—The Ministry of Communications has directed acceleration of the pace of work on Lowari Tunnel Project.
The directives were given in an emergency meeting held in the headquarters of National Highway Authority (NHA) with Federal Minister for Communications Dr. Arbab Alamgir Khan Khalil in the chair.
Those who attended the meeting included Federal Secretary, Communications, Anwar Ahmad Khan, Chairman NHA Syed Mohammad Ali Gardezi, Member Construction (1) Aurangzeb Khan, Member Construction (II) Yusuf Ali Khan, Member Added Projects Iltamash, Member Admn Rana Naseer Ahmad, Member Infrastructures and Management Planning Commission Lieutenant General (Retd) Shahid Niaz, and other high officials.
The meeting was held on the exclusive instructions of the Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani to review progress on Lowari Road Tunnel.
The General Manager (G.M) Lowari Tunnel Col (Retd) Salman gave a detailed briefing to the participants over progress on the project.
Speaking in the meeting regarding advantages of Lowari Tunnel, the Minister said that it is a mega project not only of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, but of the whole country.
Dr. Arbab Alamgir Khan Khalil said that this tunnel will not only facilitate the people of the area and ease their traveling difficulties, but, will also strengthen the road links with Central Asian States and other neighboring countries.
He said that the completion of the project will minimize distances and will help promote trade, tourism, industry, agriculture sectors and also boost the economy of the country.
The Federal Minister urged the concerned NHA officials to ensure early completion of the tunnel and said that the President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani want its early completion so that the pledges made by the democratic government with the people could be fulfilled.
On this occasion, the Chairman NHA Syed Mohammad Ali Gardezi, in his address, assured the President and the Prime Minister through the Federal Minister that the NHA is bringing all its resources into use to ensure timely completion of all NHA projects including Lowari Tunnel.
The Chairman said that the Prime Minister has promised more funds to NHA to help ensure timely completion of Lowari Tunnel.
He said that he and his team are working diligently to accelerate the pace of work on the project.
