Another three flyovers approved

Administrator Karachi Fazlur Rehman on Monday approved the construction of flyovers on three roundabouts in the city. Rehman directed the city government’s Works & Services Department to allocate funds for the construction of a flyover each at Shahra-e-Pakistan (near Water Pump), SITE (near Habib Bank Chowrangi) and Dr. Ziauddin Road (near Shaheen Complex) in the next fiscal year’s budget and also prepare PC-1 for these projects.

The city government will begin the construction of flyovers at Korangi Crossing Roundabout and near Abbasi Shaheed Hospital in the current fiscal year while it will start work on the remaining three projects in 2011, he informed.

Addressing a meeting at the Civic Center on Monday, Administrator Karachi said that the city was spreading rapidly and therefore the development process must continue. “The Works and Services Department has to play an active role in this regard and the concerned engineers must ensure immediate repair and maintenance of roads in their respective areas,” he said.

He further instructed the Works and Services Department to conduct a survey of more roundabouts in city. He said that these five flyovers are new projects while the already approved projects must be completed at time.

The city administrator said that the increased volume of traffic was creating problem at Water Pump Chowrangi (Shara-e-Pakistan) and the construction of a flyover at Habib Bank Chowrangi would make the whole corridor from Sharae Faisal to Hawksbay signal free. He said that the roundabout at Shaheen Complex was also facing problems due to increased volume of traffic at I.I. Chundrigar Road. All these problems would be solved with the early construction of flyovers, he added.

Meanwhile, Rehman constituted a 6 member committee headed by EDO Works & Services which will review the promotion of officers and staff and appointments would be made on contract basis in city government from February 2, 2010 to October 1, 2010. The committee will have Executive Director Veterinary Rasheed Jamal, District Officer Finance & Planning Mehmood Baig, District Officer Land-II Saif Abbas, Addl. Director Local Taxes Jamil Ahmed and Addl.

Director HRM Abdul Rasheed as its members. The committee will submit its report after the evaluation of all contract appointments and promotions of employees within the specific period.
