Sindh Minister For Environment Visited DHA

Karachi: Sindh Minister For Environment Mr Hasan Askari Taqvi and MNA Khushbakht Shujaat visited DHA’s Main Office here today and discussed various environmental issues and matters relating to public interest with the Administrator DHA, Brig Khalid Tirmizi.
They were given an in-depth briefing on the ongoing projects in DHA including the Waterfront Development Projects (WFD) and the measures taken by the Housing Authority to mitigate the ensuing environmental issues. The minister underlined the need of conducting joint quarterly review and monitoring of mitigation measures taken by DHA in line with IEE approved by SEPA. He said that speedy execution of WFD projects should be ensured in the national interest while addressing the environmental concerns at all cost.
The Minister was informed that DHA was making all out efforts to ensure that WFD projects remained strictly environmental friendly, met NEQs and mitigate all concerns of public. Every WFD project would have an in-build sewerage treatment plant to mitigate beach pollution.
The Minister suggested that Creek City Hospital Project, a component of WFD should be reviewed to have more number of beds than the planned capacity of 300. He also desired that the project should have an in build mechanism to ensure that the state-of-the-art world class medical facilities were made affordable for the general public. He assured all out government help and support for the same.
The Environmental Minister was informed about the need of timely completion of Gizri Flyover Project as it would help address frequent traffic jams in Gizri area. The Minister supported the idea and emphasized the need of removing illegal encroachments en-route to the Flyover to avoid traffic congestion and environmental pollution in the area.
MNA Khushbakht Shujaat raised a number of issues of public concern in DHA. She was informed that DHA had already been mandated by Corps Commander to improve the security environment in DHA and accordingly the Housing Authority was establishing a security company and planning to install surveillance cameras at focal points in DHA for improving and augmenting the security condition in the area.
On the issue of Schools, the MNA was informed that the fees in DHA Neelum High School has been raised for the first time since its establishment by merging all miscellaneous charges in the tuition fees. However the students of lower income families having an income of less than Rs. 10,000/= annually were being given more than 50% concession in the tuition fees.
The Administrator informed the MNA that the project of drainage roads rehabilitation would start in the first week of Dec 08 and the entire project would be completed on a fast track basis jointly by DHA & CBC in this fiscal year. Administrator said that the non functional DHA Power & Desalination Plant, since the last one month would start its operation in the first week of December this year giving 3 MGD of desalinated water.
