CDGL to take over parking lots run by towns, LDA

LAHORE, May 30: The City District Government of Lahore has decided in principle to take over various parking stands/places being run in the metropolis under administrative control of Town Municipal Administrations and Lahore Development Authority, it is learnt.

Officials said the purpose to take over the parking stands being run by the TMAs or LDA was to develop an effective mechanism to avoid public complaints about overcharging, vehicle theft, behaviour of parking staff/contractors and illegal parking spots. The CDGL also wanted to run such parking stands under complete control of its public facility wing so as to deal such matters under one department, they added.

They said the public facility wing had recently sought report about such parking stands from LDA and the TMAs of Allama Iqbal, Ravi, Shalamar, Samanabad, Data Ganj Bakhsh, Nishtar, Wagah, Aziz Bhatti and Gulberg towns. After receiving reports the CDGL would take over such stands by formulating a policy and issuing a formal notification in this connection, they said.

The officials said at present the CDGL was running 349 parking stands through contractors in various localities of the city on its own.

According to documents the localities where the CDGL is running parking stands, included Ferozpur road (49), Mozang road (3), Hall road (4), Shahrah-e-Fatima Jinnah (5), Ravi road (12), Wahdat road (5), Anarkali (15), Multan road (5), GT road (11), Shahdara Chowk (8), Iqbal town’s main boulevard (8), Samanabad to Gulshan-i-Ravi (3), Shalimar link road (8), Baghbanpura GT road (22), Circular road (17), Allama Iqbal town (4), Gulberg main boulevard (31), Hali road (1), The Mall (20), Jail road (11), Egerton road (12), Davies road (13), Empress road (2), McLeod road (2), Lawrence road (3), Multan road (2), Canal, Bahawalpur and Outfall roads (3), Kalma chowk main road to Season chowk (13), Kalma chowk (2), Shadman market (1), Main road Gulab Devi hospital to fruit market (2) and Samanabad Mor to Gulshan-i-Ravi (7).

“Though we are already running 349 parking stands in various localities of the city, we also plan to take control of even those being operated directly by TMAs, LDA or the departments, which come under umbrella of the CDGL,” District Officer (public facility) Kanwar Usman Saeed told Dawn.

He said the 349 number included some parking stands which were yet to be made functional properly.

Saeed said he had also started working to get cases registered against operators/contractors of illegal parking stands by conducting raids at various localities of the city. “In the wake of the move we have also closed some stands by putting their so-called contractors behind bars. If we succeed in closing illegal stands besides taking control of parking lots being run by TMAs and LDA, the CDGL will surely be able to reduce public complaints in this regard,” Mr Saeed claimed.

He said the CDGL was also thinking to pay royalty to TMAs and LDA after taking over their parking stands. It may be recalled that a CDGL team has recently got cases registered against some people involved in operating parking stands illegally near McLeod road, Empress road, Lunda bazaar, Alhamra Arts Council, Falleti’s Hotel and Qila Gujjar Singh police station.
