The President made these remarks while talking to a five-member delegation of Asian Development Bank led by their vice president, Mr. Liqun Jin at the Aiwan-e-Sadr here Wednesday. The President briefed the delegation of the Government’s reforms agenda.
He stated that as result of these reforms, all macro-economic indicators of the national economy were positive and there was a need to translate these for the benefit of the common man for which projects supported by ADB would play a key role. He thanked the ADB team for assisting Pakistan in the development of infrastructure projects including Gwadar Port.
He also thanked ADB for their participation in the Pakistan Development Forum and continued assistance to Pakistan. He said Pakistan was interested in assisting ADB for the rehabilitation of Afghanistan and sought support from ADB for promoting regional cooperation under the larger umbrella project of regional economic cooperation with CARS countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Mr. Jin thanked the President and Government of Pakistan for their excellent cooperation and support. He expressed deep appreciation of the Government’s reforms agenda, which during the last four years had led to an economic turnaround of the country making kit a model for developing nations.
He said that ADB’s lending program for the years 2004-2006 is estimated at around US Dollar 800 Million per annum. Core poverty reduction and poverty intervention projects constitute more than half of the total lending program. Finance Minister Shaukat Aziz and other senior officials were also present during the call.
