ISLAMABAD: The NWFP authorities on Saturday successfully completed their operation to get 6,049 kanals of the government land vacated in Dera Ismail Khan from the illegal possession of close associates of Maulana Fazlur Rehman and ex-chief minister NWFP Akram Khan Durrani.
The two-day operation, which started on Friday, did not face any resistance and concluded without any hassle on Saturday evening. The vacated land has been handed over to the Agriculture Department of the province for its use.
After the completion of the action, jointly coordinated by the Revenue, Police and Agriculture Departments of the DI Khan district, some former occupants of the land approached the Revenue officials and complained that they were wrongly dealt with and that some of their machinery and agriculture equipment was left behind on the land.
On Friday, the authorities regained the possession of 2,740 kanals of land, situated in Rakh Zandani, and almost 616 kanals from Ratta Kulachi. The remaining part of the illegally occupied land at Rakh Mahra Prova Moza of district D I Khan was taken over on Saturday.
The said land was leased out to several people associated with Fazlur Rehman in 2006 but cancelled the following year. Those in whose names the lease was signed for a period of 10 years for just Rs 200 per kanal per year included personal staff of Fazlur Rehman and his brother Maulana Lutfur Rehman, their relations and party men and a cousin of former chief minister Akram Durrani.
However, despite the cancellation order, the land, which was used by the Agriculture Department for seeds farm, was never returned to the provincial government as Maulana’s men got a stay order from a civil court and continued with its possession. The stay order was vacated on October 28, 2008 following which the final action was planned and successfully executed.
