LAHORE – Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Wednesday gave a detailed briefing to party chief Nawaz Sharif on the public welfare projects at a high level meeting here. While addressing the meeting, the CM said the Punjab government was pursuing a comprehensive programme of public welfare under which a number of projects were being executed expeditiously.

He said credit went to Punjab government for realising the dream of the poor and the common man of having their own house through launching of Aashiyana housing schemes first time in the history of the country and these schemes had even better residential facilities than the housing societies of the elite. The chief minister said the programme of distribution of 3- and 5-marla plots among the shelterless had been finalised under which one lakh plots would be distributed in the rural areas. Similarly, he said, plots would also be distributed among shelterless people in cities and towns for the construction of houses and a target of five lakh plots had been fixed.

Praising the Punjab government projects for the poor, Nawaz Sharif said welfare of common man and the poor should be the pivotal of all policies of the government as they have equal right on national resources. He said utilisation of the redundant lands of Auqaf and other departments should be considered for the welfare projects and provision of recreational facilities to the masses. He said the project of distribution of three and five marla plots in cities and towns should be initiated at the earliest and execution of this scheme should immediately be started in rural areas after receipt of the report of district monitoring committees.

He said that planning should also be made for the construction of multi-storey buildings having modern facilities for the residents in katchi abadies of the provincial metropolis. He said three katchi abadies should be selected for launching of the model project.
